Spring is in the air. ... So is road construction.

The New York State Thruway Authority recently announced that, weather permitting, it would begin replacement of the southbound deck on the North Grand Island Bridge to Grand Island Monday, March 15. The project, expected to continue to September, is part of the Thruway Authority's $55 million bridge rehabilitation project.

The project is expected to take place during the overnight hours with closures and detours planned. Motorists should expect nightly closures of the southbound North Grand Island Bridge as follows:

•Sunday, March 15 to Wednesday, May 20: from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

•Tuesday, May 26 to Wednesday, Sept. 2: from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.

•Tuesday, Sept. 8 to Friday Oct. 30: from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

During these timeframes, southbound traffic from Niagara Falls to Grand Island will be detoured to the northbound bridge. Two-way traffic will be maintained on the northbound bridge with traffic reduced to a single lane in each direction.

During the overnight closure of the southbound Grand Island Bridge, two southbound entrance ramps in Niagara Falls - from Buffalo Avenue and the Robert Moses Parkway - will be closed. A detour to Niagara Falls Boulevard also will be posted.

Motorists can view traffic conditions at www.thruway.ny.gov/webcams. Area traffic cameras include the I-190 at the exit at Buffalo Avenue, the I-190 toll barrier at the base of the southbound bridge, and the I-190 at Exit 20 on West River Parkway.
