Prioritizes lowering the gas tax, restoring education funding in coming negotiations

Assemblyman John Ceretto, R-C-I-Lewiston, observed Gov. Andrew Cuomo's 2015 State of the State/executive budget proposal, which outlined the governor's agenda for this upcoming session. Ceretto said the governor's agenda contains worthy proposals that could move the state forward. Ceretto said he is optimistic he can work with the governor on meaningful tax relief measures, including his plan to lower the gas tax, and to completely restore education funding that was cut in 2010.

"Gov. Cuomo's budget proposal prioritizes tax relief for working class Western New Yorkers," Ceretto said Wednesday. "I look forward to working with the governor and legislative leaders to enact meaningful tax relief measures. In particular, I will be working with the governor on my proposal to lower the gas tax down to the national average. If passed, this measure would provide significant savings to families, businesses, and help grow the economy. New York has one of the highest gas taxes in the country, and now is the time to deliver this tax relief to Western New York families."

Ceretto is renewing his call to completely restore education funding that was cut in 2010. While education funding has been increased every year Ceretto has been in office, he said a hole remains in the education budget that negatively affects local schools. Ceretto is committed to delivering a world-class education to Western New York children and is making fully funding local schools one of his highest priorities.

"As a father of four, I understand the importance of giving our kids the best education possible," Ceretto said. "While I have consistently delivered increased education funding for our local schools, work remains to be done. I remain committed to fully funding local schools and will continue fighting to give our kids the education they need to have successful careers when they grow up."

In addition to tax relief and increasing education aid, Ceretto listed investment in infrastructure and controlling college costs as his other important priorities.
