Witmer Cemetery in the Town of Niagara was the site of a cleanup project by a North Tonawanda Boy Scout troop and the Town of Niagara Highway Department Saturday.

Life Scout Anthony Kozak, 17, of Troop 931 chose to clean up the cemetery as his community service project, required in order to advance to an Eagle Scout. He said Witmer Cemetery stood out to him because it was used as a burial ground for veterans whose families could not afford to buy plots.

"I wanted to help the fallen veterans and clean up the cemetery," Kozak said. "I saw it was very deteriorated, so why not clean this area?"

Kozak, his troop and the highway department cleared weeds, raked dead leaves and removed fallen branches, "bringing the cemetery back to life," he said.

"I think it's a great project," Scoutmaster Brian Kindron said. "When he showed me the project proposal, it's one of these little forgotten gems of local history. I think it's a good thing."
