The Western New York Sludge Free Alliance will hold a free informational meeting about the effects of sewage sludge on farmland at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 14, at Frontier Volunteer Fire Co., 2176 Liberty Drive, Wheatfield.

Murray McBride, professor of soil science at Cornell University, will speak at the meeting. He will discuss how the contaminants in sewage sludge affect soil and farming systems.

McBride has published articles about the transfer of toxic metals from soil to crops in several journals. He currently researches ways to protect crops grown in historically contaminated soils.

The Western New York Sludge Free Alliance was launched in May as a response to Quasar Energy Group's application to process and distribute its food waste and sewage sludge product "equate" in Western New York.
