The Town of Wheatfield Lions Club will hold its first "International Night" at 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8, at the Wheatfield Lions Club pavilion. According to Wheatfield Chairman Ralph DeVantier, the event will include Lion Clubs from Canada and the U.S., including Fonthill, St. David's, Lewiston, Niagara and Pendleton and the host Wheatfield.

International Night will include a night of fun, goodwill and networking. The attending Lions Clubs will all have the opportunity to present the programs they provide for their respective communities. DeVantier is hoping this "International Night" will be established as an annual event of the Wheatfield Lions Club.

The Town of Wheatfield Lions Club belongs to the world's largest service organization, which is Lions Club International with over 45,740 clubs and memberships of 1.3 million men and women in 208 countries and geographic areas.

The Wheatfield Lions Club was chartered in 1973 in District 20N. The Wheatfield Lions Club has the only clubhouse among the 50 Lion Clubs in Western New York. The clubhouse has a dining/meeting area, kitchen, bathrooms, administrative office, pavilion and the largest loan closet (medical assistance apparatuses) east of Syracuse. These are loaned free to people in need of this type of equipment (contact Bill Ross at 716-731-5949).

The clubhouse is located on 17 acres with a large Nature Park. The venue is open to all 20N Lion Clubs for events and rented to the public for graduations, birthday and engagement parties, family reunions, as well as other special occasions.

The Wheatfield Lions Club generates funds not only from its annual Pancake Breakfast, but from the annual Blind Seal Drive, where community contributions help support many WNY agencies that help people with blind, hearing and disability problems.

The club also co-sponsors a Citizenship Awards Dinner for fourth, fifth and sixth grades from the Niagara Wheatfield public and parochial schools. The dinner has been sponsored by the Town of Niagara and Wheatfield Lions Clubs for more than 50 years with an attendance of 250 to 300 parents, grandparents, teachers and Lions Club members to honor the young citizenship award winners.

The motto of all Lion Clubs is "We Serve" and whose members serve their communities by meeting humanitarian needs, encouraging peace and understanding and by being leaders in the community.
