A Wheatfield resident was honored at the annual Lutheran Awards Celebration Dinner held recently in Lancaster.

Marshall Chapin, a member of St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bergholz, received the Magi Award, which recognizes people who volunteer their time to local ministries, social services and community programs.

"I was very humbled and honored to receive that award," Chapin said.

Chapin was chosen for his work in maintaining, repairing and updating St. James. Chapin said he first got involved in maintenance at the church by working with his predecessor there. After the original maintenance worker died, Chapin said he took over, because he knew other members of the parish were unable or didn't know how to do the work. He has been performing upkeep at St. James for about five years now.

"It's just something I like to do to give back," he said, adding that he tries to do all the maintenance work he's capable of himself before calling in outside help.

The celebration dinner where the award was given was sponsored by Lutheran Charities, St. John's Lutheran Home for Children and the Lutheran Foundation of Western New York. The charities help to support community outreach programs in Western New York.
