The Niagara Falls Bridge Commission is planning a series of commemorative activities in honor of its 75th anniversary and the 50th anniversary of the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge.

"To properly acknowledge and pay tribute to 75 years of effective, binational service to the Western New York and Southern Ontario regions, the commission has a series of exciting events and activities planned for the second-half of 2013," said NFBC Chairperson Thomas G. Pryce.

Commemorative activities commence with the release of an official webpage (www.niagarafallsbridges75.com), as well as anniversary logos, downloadable Lewiston-Queenston Bridge 50th anniversary poster art, weekly "Did You Know? Interesting Facts!" advisories, and updated NFBC bridge and plaza facilities photos.

In the coming months the celebration will feature 75th/50th anniversary T-shirts (available for purchase through the webpage in support of select regional food banks, a new Niagara bridge spans video montage, the unveiling of a Lewiston-Queenston Bridge oil-painting, an enhanced public fireworks display coordinated through the Niagara Parks Commission, educational outreach to local school districts and more.

Did You Know?

The unsung heroes of the Rainbow Bridge construction were certainly the "High Steel" workers. More than half of the bridge crew (of about 60 members in total) were of Kahnawake (Mohawk) First Nations decent. Their fearlessness and unique ability made them invaluable in this type of precarious work.
