Youngstown Lions active in community

The Youngstown Lions Club will hold its annual white cane sale outside Melloni's Marketplace and Rite Aid Pharmacy in Youngstown on Saturday, June 15, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, June 16, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Those who donate will receive a small white cane with a red band (and a big thank you).

"Blind and visually impaired people in many countries use the familiar white cane with a red band at the bottom. Lions help increase awareness of this 'symbol of independence,' " said Lion John MacArthur.

Those unable to visit can send donations to Youngstown Lions Club, P.O. Box 405, Youngstown, NY 14174.

All donations received by the Lions are given back to the community. Free events such as the Children's Easter Egg Hunt and the Christmas baskets for the needy are among the group's causes.

In the photos, Youngstown Lions are shown volunteering at the "Tour de Cure" June 8 at Fort Niagara State Park. The lions provided 133 bicyclists in the 100-mile and the 62-mile routes, with food and drink at the first rest stop, 17 miles from the race's start at Niagara County Community College.
