Nearly 3,000 Girl Scouts from North America, including Canadian Girl Guides, descended upon Niagara Falls last weekend for an inaugural and unprecedented sing-a-long of traditional and historical Girl Scout songs. Events took place on Goat Island overlooking the Niagara River and also at the Hard Rock Café in downtown Niagara Falls.

Recognizing its 100th anniversary, the Girl Scouts have proclaimed 2012 as "The Year of the Girl." The Falls' celebration of girls recognized their leadership potential in the workplace and in all communities.

"Advancing the position of women and girls in our society means we must champion all girls," said Cindy L. Odom, CEO of the Girl Scouts of Western New York. "Strengthening a girl's sense of self and boosting her capacity to seek and meet challenges in contemporary society will undoubtedly result in positive systemic change for our community and our world.

"When girls succeed, so does society."

The Girl Scouts of Western New York serves more than 20,000 girls and 9,000 adult volunteers in Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Niagara, Orleans and Wyoming counties.
