About 1,000 students lined the front hallway of Niagara-Wheatfield High School and the school band played "Pomp and Circumstance" on Dec. 20 as Lonnie Weaver, escorted by Gary Heuck from the state Department of Labor, was awarded an N-W diploma.

He was on track to graduate from high school in 1968 when he was called up for the Vietnam War and served two tours of duty from 1969-1971.

The Sanborn resident was a combat engineer with the Army. Weaver earned his diploma as a result of Operation Recognition, created to recognize the dedication and sacrifice of World War II, Korea, and Vietnam veterans who left school before graduation by awarding them a high school diploma.

Shown is Weaver receiving his diploma from N-W Assistant Principal James Campbell. His granddaughter Hailey Vanderhinder, a student from Edward Town Middle School, looks on.
