Flags to be flown at half-staff on Feb. 16-17

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced flags on state buildings will be flown at half-staff Feb. 16-17, from sunrise to sunset, in honor of fallen New York State Police Trooper Steven A. Tyrrell.

“Trooper Steven A. Tyrrell selflessly committed his life to the betterment of his community, our state and our country,” Hochul said. “May his legacy live on through the enduring power of his service, and through the countless lives he touched through his actions and example. Our hearts go out to his family and loved ones.”

On Feb. 7, Tyrrell passed away from an illness stemming from his assignment in and around the World Trade Center site following the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. He retired from the New York State Police after 26 years of dedicated service on Sept. 27, 2023. Tyrrell was from Rochester and is survived by three children: Sean, Kathryn and Rachel; and siblings Barry, Greg, Leslie and Sharon.
