On March 30, 2023 at 1514 hours, the Niagara County Sheriff's Office Communications Center received a report of a possible fire in a building at Nouryon Chemical Inc. at 2153 Lockport Olcott Road in the Town of Newfane.
The building is used to store organic peroxide, and canisters of the organic peroxide were believed to be exploding in the building. The building did sustain damage due to the explosions.
The Niagara County Sheriff's Office Drone Team responded and used a robot to assist responding fire personnel with safely assessing the inside of the building. Fire company personnel and the Niagara County HazMat Team were able to stop the uncontrolled chemical reaction and develop a plan to safely resolve the situation.
Crews will remain on scene until the situation is fully resolved. At this time, there is no immediate danger to the public. There is no estimate of loss for the damage to the building or contents at this time.
