EC Senior Services’ RSVP program partners with EC Department of Health to sew over 550 masks

The Erie County Department of Senior Services’ Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (“RSVP”) has partnered with the Erie County Department of Health to sew over 550 masks for children. Thirty volunteer sewers from across Erie County have dedicated their time and talent to creating the reusable masks and plan to eventually produce more than 1,000 masks. Many of the materials used have been donated, and elastic is still in significant demand.

“We are pleased to partner with the Department of Health to address the need for reusable masks in the community,” Erie County Commissioner of Senior Services David Shenk said. “This volunteer opportunity has been a great way for our RSVP volunteers to serve the community while maintaining social distancing.”

“When so many other opportunities to volunteer have been interrupted, we truly appreciate having seniors volunteer to craft cloth masks for our community,” Erie County Commissioner of Health Dr. Gale Burstein said. “Wearing a face mask helps to protect those around us – including seniors who may be at higher risk of disease complications – from respiratory illnesses like COVID-19 and the flu.”

Those over the age of 55 who would like to participate in this project, or have elastic or other supplies to donate, can contact the Erie County RSVP program at 716-858-8081 or email [email protected].

The Erie County Retired & Senior Volunteer Program has been providing meaningful service opportunities to adults age 55-plus in Erie County for nearly 50 years as part of the Erie County Department of Senior Services. Currently, more than 550 volunteers are part of the program. RSVP has many opportunities available to make a difference in the community.

The mission of the Erie County Department of Senior Services is to promote the well-being of all older adults through coordinated and cost-effective services that enhance their independence, dignity and quality of life.
