Scholarships are given annually to area graduates in memory of Nancy Price, who was the beloved director of Youngstown Recreation for 20 years. She worked tirelessly in all aspects of her work with youth and truly made a difference in the lives she touched. These scholarships allow our community to continue to make an impact on our youth in Nancy Price's memory.

Congratulations to this years' Nancy Price Scholarship winners: Jenna Deutschman, Eric Smith, Joseph Beatty, Troy Toohey and Greg Sledziewski. Deutschman was awarded $1,000 while Smith, Beatty, Toohey and Sledziewski were each awarded $500. All five recipients were chosen for their academic achievement, community service, and involvement in Youngstown Recreation.

•Jenna plans on attending Niagara County Community College for liberal arts and sciences. She has many wonderful memories growing up participating in the activities offered by Youngstown Recreation. She stated, “The Youngstown Recreation Program has influenced my life greatly.” In addition to participating in the many activities, she also volunteered numerous hours over the past several years with the Halloween and Christmas parties, nickel carnivals, and weekly arts and crafts.

•Eric plans on majoring in chemical engineering. He has participated in Youngstown Recreation programs his entire life. He especially enjoyed attending the Halloween celebration with his family and participating in the basketball program, learning skills and making friends. He continues using these skills and playing pick-up basketball at Veterans Park. Eric said, “I believe that the amazing sense of community that I learned through the Youngstown Recreation Department and the experiences I have had at Lewiston-Porter will continue to inspire me to one day make a difference in the field of chemical engineering especially in regards to helping our environment.”

•Joseph plans on attending Kent State University for business and was recently accepted into the Honor College Program. He has great memories of playing floor hockey, basketball and pool at the Youngstown Red Brick. Joe commented, “When I was little, sports didn’t interest me nearly as much as they do now, and I owe it to the Youngstown Recreation for helping me to become the athlete that I am today.” He was awarded the All WNY Scholar Athlete and the large school honor.

•Greg plans on attending the University of Miami with a major in biology. His goal is to improve the safety, health and well-being of the community and make a difference in society. Greg has enjoyed participating in the baseball and basketball programs. He stated, “Recreational sports provide many benefits to our communities. They bring people together, encourage physical activity, and teach valuable life lessons to our society’s youth.” He said he feels that, through these programs, “I’ve been able to connect with members of my community at a greater level.”

•Troy plans on attending St. Lawrence University for pre-law while also playing soccer for the university. He has many fond memories participating in the floor hockey and basketball programs, as well as attending the programs at Falkner Park with his family. Troy stated, "I can attribute much of my love for sports to Youngstown Recreation. One thing I love about sports is the people you meet through them and the bonds you form. I began to form many bonds and friendships that I still have today through programs at Youngstown Recreation."
