Grand Island Board of Education: Road signs to mark GIHS boys volleyball state championship

Sat, Feb 1st 2020 07:00 am

New road signage will soon go up on the Island noting the town is the home of the 2019 New York State champions in boys volleyball.

“When you are a state champion, the accolades just keep coming,” board President Ashli Dreher said during Monday’s Grand Island Board of Education meeting in introducing Highway Superintendent Dick Crawford, who attended the meeting with deputy Skip Mrkall to present signs for the district and town that will note the Vikings Division II volleyball title won in Albany.

At Monday’s meeting of the Grand Island Board of Education, the trustees voted 7-0 to accept a donation of signage, including miniature signs for athletes.

Pictured with the signs are, from left: Grand Island High School Principal Michael Lauria, trustees Joy LaMarca and Robin McCreary, Athletic Director Jon Roth, board President Ashli Dreher, Deputy Highway Superintendent Skip Mrkall, board Vice President Susan Marston, Highway Superintendent Dick Crawford, and trustees Glenn Bobeck, Nicole Novak and Jay Grover. Crawford said the large signs were made at the county highway sign shop, and Superintendent of Schools Brian Graham said they will go up “so that everybody who travels on Grand Island sees it.”

“We’re now looking for a place to put these in town,” Crawford said.
