History Center of Niagara: 'Achieving the Dream: Women of Color in Science, Business and the Arts'

Join the History Center of Niagara for children’s program about women of African American decent who made their mark on U.S. history. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 20, at 215 Niagara St., Lockport.

A press release explained, “These innovative women achieved success in the fields of science, business and the arts, including mathematicians, inventors, aviators, environmentalists, sculptors and entrepreneurs. These courageous women broke down social barriers and permanently changed the course of history through their strength, effort and determination. Learn about Marie Van Brittan Brown, credited with inventing the first closed circuit television, and Dr. Gladys West, who is recognized for her contributions to the mathematical modeling of the shape of the earth. This soon led to the creation of the first global positioning system, more commonly known as the GPS.

“Children ages 7 -12 will play fun, interactive math games, learn how GPS and geocaching works, make a small model plane, sculpt with clay and much more. Find out about these unsung heroes who made a difference and changed a nation. Hear their stories as we travel through time and learn about their incredible journeys. Children ages 7-12 are welcome to attend. Snacks and refreshments will also be provided at noontime.”
