St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral, 139 Pearl St., Buffalo, invites the public to the free mini-festival celebrating our animal companions in honor of the Feast of St. Francis. Free kids’ activities and treats for all will be offered from 9 a.m. to noon. The Buffalo Animal Shelter will bring adoptable cats and dogs.

At 9:30 a.m., a 20-minute memorial service for those who lost a pet will take place. Participants are invited to bring a picture of their deceased pets to display on an altar. At 11 a.m., all are invited to bring their pets (they are to be leashed or crated) for the Blessing of Animals service. "Blessings-to-go" for those who cannot attend the service will be offered until noon.

Festival attendees are encouraged to bring a donation of unopened pet food and treats to support the pet pantry at Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Buffalo. Cat food is especially needed.

Blessing of animals or pets has become synonymous with the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, which is celebrated by Christians on or around Oct. 4. St. Francis was the founder of the Franciscan Order and is associated with patronage of animals and the environment.
