Editor's note: The Niagara County Legislature mistakenly announced Legislator Rebecca Wydysh would become the first female vice chair. In fact, Renae Kimble previously held the position.

"While I was certainly proud to think I was the first woman to be appointed as vice chair, I am happier knowing that it didn't take until almost 2020 for it to have happened," Wydysh said Sept. 24. "I'd like to extend my sincere apologies to former Vice Chairman Renae Kimble, who, in 2003, was the first woman to be appointed in the history of the Niagara County Legislature."

At a meeting Thursday, Niagara County Legislator Rebecca Wydysh was appointed as the first female Republican vice chair in the history of the Niagara County Legislature.

She succeeds Clyde Burmaster, who passed away in August after a lengthy illness.

Wydysh, who represents Wheatfield and Lewiston, expressed gratitude toward her colleagues for their recognition of her efforts across the county.

“I am grateful to my fellow legislators for the faith they have shown in my ability to not only represent my constituency effectively, but to be a leader in policy initiatives and implementation in Niagara County,” Wydysh said.

She also recognized the fact her appointment is historic, as no GOP woman previously held the position.

“Not too long ago, our county celebrated its 200th birthday,” Wydysh said. “It’s pretty amazing that, throughout this time, no woman has ascended to this position. Even though it’s just our little corner of the world, it is truly an honor to carry the torch.”

Niagara County Legislature Chairman Keith McNall, who represents Lockport, said he believes Wydysh will do an exceptional job as vice chairwoman.

“Legislator Wydysh is a passionate advocate for the community, and has taken the lead on a multitude of initiatives, including the fight against the opioid crisis,” McNall said. “I am looking forward to working with Becky as we continue to strive to make Niagara County an even better place.”
