Town of Porter Councilwoman Irene Myers said she seeks to continue the legacy of Clyde Burmaster in the Niagara County Legislature’s First District. Burmaster recently passed away unexpectedly, which created a vacancy for the upcoming election.

“After much prayer and discussion, I felt the best way to honor Clyde was to carry on his legacy and fight for the residents that he cared so much about,” Myers said. “Sue Burmaster was happy to hear of my interest and I’m honored to receive her blessing. Now I want to give the community a voice going forward.”

Myers, a Republican and Conservative, pointed to her love of the community as a reason why she makes a good candidate.

“In just a short time, I was happy to support issues like Summer Fest, the development of a regional brochure supporting our community, and working towards procuring funds for portable radios used in emergency management,” Myers said.

As a legislator, Myers said she would “continue the aggressive fight against CWM’s expansion,” as it was an issue that she and Burmaster passionately shared opposition of.

“If CWM wants to expand, they better hope someone else is elected instead of me,” Myers said. “I will fight with every fiber of my body to prevent it. Not only is it the right thing to do, but it’s what Clyde would want to see happen.”

Environmental issues and enhancing the towns are important to Myers, as well. Cleanup of the Lake Ontario Ordinance Works and the growth of the community are her two major points of attention.

“We need leaders who will do everything possible to make our communities safe from environmental threats while having the vision to preserve our identity,” Myers said. “I have proven to be that kind of leader.”

A GM/UAW employee with over 20 years of service, Myers is a third-generation homestead resident in Porter. She has two daughters and a granddaughter.

She is the chairwomen of the Veterans Chicken BBQ, which benefits the Ransomville American Legion and Youngstown VFW, as well as a former 4-H and NU girl’s youth travel hockey team leader. She recently joined the Elks Lodge No. 41.
