Event upgrades for 2019 event, to be held at new location this year

The Western & Central New York Chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society announced there is still time to register for the 21st annual “Light The Night Walk,” to be held at Canalside on Friday, Sept. 20.

“Light The Night” is an inspirational community event that raises awareness and funding for groundbreaking research and treatment options to eliminate cancer. Participants carry illuminated lanterns – white to represent survivorship and hope, red to represent celebration and community, and gold to represent honor and remembrance.

This year’s event will once again include the Remembrance Pavilion, where participants can stop for a moment of reflection to honor those they have loved and lost to cancer. Prior to the start of the walk, cancer survivors will be recognized during the Circle of Survivors, a powerful moment where survivors raise their illuminated white lanterns, signaling the lighting of the “Beam of Hope.” Closing the event will be a celebratory light show extravaganza.

Last year’s Light The Night Walk raised nearly $450,000 and attracted nearly 2,500 participants to Delaware Park. This year, the chapter hopes to raise even more. Participants raising $100 or more become a “Champion for Cures,” and receive a commemorative “Light the Night” T-shirt.

Money raised through the event is spent locally to help fund research projects throughout the region. The funds also help the organization provide vital patient access and services to more than 6,000 locals, along with educational programs, support groups and other services.
