Over $46,000 to aid victims of rape, domestic violence

Niagara County Legislature Chairman Keith McNall appeared at the YWCA’s Lockport location last week to present a check for $46,500, which was made official through a resolution he sponsored to help offset statewide cuts.

The YWCA of the Niagara Frontier has provided a domestic violence advocate in the district attorney’s office and the Niagara County Department of Social Services Child Protective/Domestic Violence Unit for over 10 years; however, the organization was recently contacted by the Office of Victim Services and informed funding will be reduced by 25%.

“This devoted community organization providing vital services has been severely impacted by state funding cuts and is struggling financially. This money will help make sure victims have the help they so desperately need,” McNall said. “It will strengthen the YWCA’s outreach, help to protect our women and children, and prevent violence in the home.”

The YWCA is the only comprehensive confidential domestic violence services provider in eastern Niagara County and the North Tonawanda community. Their services include adult and children counseling, case management, safety planning and assistance with orders of protection, court accompaniment, crisis housing, supportive transitional housing, and a 24/7 crisis hotline.

The YWCA noted it averages just under 1,000 hotline calls every year for domestic violence. On average, the organization houses about 128 domestic violence victims annually, and services an estimated 740 non-residential domestic violence victims each year. In addition, the YWCA responds to an average of 60 to 70 sexual assault cases per year.
