11th annual Niagara Wine Festival showcase held in Village of Lewiston

By Catherine Banks

Niagara Wine Trail Executive Director

Wineries have been a part of our local scene for 20 years, dating to 1999 when the winery today known as Niagara Landing opened its doors in Cambria. Today, visitors year-round, from both near and far, can explore over 20 wineries, cideries, meaderies and breweries, to enjoy an array of local beverages in all seasons.

A highlight of any winery visit will be when local vintners welcome you to a wine tasting, whether you’re a regular guest or a newcomer. Winemakers will gladly share new releases and reserve vintages and answer any questions visitors have about their wines. It will be then when you can personally see the passion and dedication they have pouring locally made wines into your glass.

The single time all year that Niagara Wine Trail wineries are showcased on display, all together in one place, happens during the last weekend every July in Lewiston. The 11th annual Niagara Wine Festival will be held again this year at Academy Park (site of the Lewiston Peach Festival). Wine tasting and wines by the glass will be offered throughout the weekend, along with live music, games, presentations and demonstrations to entertain you. So you can relax and sample wines from the three counties that are part of the Niagara Wine Trail – across Niagara, Orleans and Monroe counties – they bring the wine, and you can enjoy it at your leisure.

You can make an afternoon or even a weekend out of the occasion. After your festival revelry, continue on with the Lewiston shopping and dining scene, including Casa Antica and the Brickyard Brewing Company. Visit niagarawinefestivalusa.com for details and the schedule. All tickets are an easy weekend pass, so you can come and go with your pass anytime Saturday, July 27, from noon to 7 p.m., and Sunday, July 28, from noon to 5 p.m. Couples, singles and groups are welcome.

Also, if you love a party and a crowd, be sure to visit for any of the other special event weekends held annually and listed on the website at niagarawinetrail.org. Likewise, if you’d much rather visit for a more intimate wine tasting experience, visit during all the rest of the year – or even call ahead to any individual wineries for special occasions or tours. With so many local wineries to choose from, you will find the perfect fit for your tastes, no matter what they might be.
