While Alzheimer’s disease currently cannot be prevented or slowed, there are steps to take and recommendations to follow in the areas of diet and nutrition, exercise and cognitive activity that promote healthy aging.

Learn more during a free educational program offered by dementia experts at the Alzheimer’s Association Western New York Chapter in August. “Healthy Living for your Brain and Body” will be presented at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13, at the Ransomville Free Library, 3733 Ransomville Road.

“Understanding and Responding to Dementia-Related Behavior” will be presented in Niagara Falls by chapter experts at 3 p.m. Monday, Aug. 19. The free class, in the LaSalle Library branch at 8728 Buffalo Ave., is aimed at helping caregivers decode behavioral messages, identify common behavior triggers, and strategize to overcome these challenges.

A third educational program, “Know the 10 Warning Signs,” will look at what is considered normal memory loss and what could indicate something more serious such as disease that is causing dementia symptoms. Chapter experts will offer this free education program at 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 26, at the Lockport Free Library, 23 East Ave.

Additionally, the chapter oversees several monthly caregiver support group meetings across the county, which allow caregivers to connect with others facing similar challenges and hear advice for overcoming them. Meetings take place on:

•The second Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 67 Saxton St., Lockport. Community social respite is available at this location. Call 1-800-272-3900 for more information; and at 5:30 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 2239 W. Creek Road, Burt.

•The third Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Adult Day, 3780 Commerce Court No. 11, North Tonawanda. Community social respite may be available at this location. Call 800-272-3900 for more information; and at 6 p.m. at Mount St. Mary’s Hospital, Room 723A, 5300 Military Road, Lewiston.

Community social programs, or respites, are also available every month in Batavia and Corfu. This program provides relief to those who care for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia. It also offers them time to refresh and re-charge, while their loved one is engaged in social activities in a safe environment.

Hartland United Methodist Church in Gasport offers this free service from 10:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. on the second Wednesday. For more information, contact Beth Wheeler at 716-772-2376.

In Lewiston, respite is offered at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church at 400 Ridge Road from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the third Wednesday. Contact Barbara Price at 716-754-4591 for more details.

And on the second Tuesday, Trinity Lutheran Church offers the four-hour service, starting at 10:30 a.m. For additional information, contact Laurie Bauch at 716-434-5982. A caregiver support group meeting takes place at the same location during the first hour of the respite service. For more information about the meeting, call 800-272-3900.

Niagara County residents also have access to caregiving resources and programs close to home through the chapter’s partnership with the local office for the aging. To learn more about OFA caregiver resources, call 716-438-3030
