The 20th annual Jack Beatty Memorial Hospice Cruise and Clambake, a popular fundraising event held for Niagara Hospice, was held Friday, July 12, at the Porter on the Lake. The high water levels of Lake Ontario required many last-minute changes to be made, but organizers said the event was still an exceptional celebration.

Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours owner John Kinney stepped up and donated multiple jet boats so those who had purchased tickets would still get a chance to go out on the water. Participants enjoyed a sunset cruise complete with champagne and unique views.

A press release said, “The 20th annual Jack Beatty Memorial Hospice Cruise and Clambake event staff was humbled by the generosity of Kinney and his willingness to provide such a major contribution on short notice.”

For 20 years, members of the Youngstown Yacht Club and skippers around Western New York have generously donated their boats and time to take attendees up the Niagara River for this fundraising event. This year, changes had to be made due to the dire water situation at the Youngstown Yacht Club, to protect the safety of all involved. Many skippers still showed up to the party, in lieu of the modifications, to support the fundraiser.

Participants enjoyed a complimentary cocktail hour, live music by The Junkyard Dogs, a clambake and buffet put on by Brickyard Brewing Company and served by the Lions Club, and the sweet sound of the Soul Committee well into the evening hours. The silent auction offered donated gifts.

The press release said, “We are so grateful for all of the attendees who ‘rode the wave’ when event changes became necessary. So many participants were incredibly patient and understanding as the event staff worked to offer a stellar event experience in lieu of the circumstances.”

This year’s event proceeds will benefit hospice families and patients. In particular, funds are going to replace the 20-year-old sleeper couches in patient rooms at Hospice House. This will help family members stay comfortably overnight with a loved one.
