Historical Society of The Tonawandas returns to Crystal Beach

Thu, May 2nd 2019 05:15 pm

On Wednesday, May 8 one can return to Crystal Beach Park with Rose Ann Hirsch, amusement park historian and author, who will do a presentation on Crystal Beach Park. At 7 p.m. the presentation will take place in the Community Room of Tonawanda City Hall, 200 Niagara St.  All are welcome.

For 101 years, Crystal Beach Park was a magical place for generations of Western New Yorkers. The author will present a slideshow collection of photographs and postcards from the park’s beginning in 1888 to its final year in 1989. One will relive dipping their toes in Lake Erie, screaming on the Comet, or shivering in fright in Laff in the Dark. Other fond memories of the Magic Carpet or the Fun House can come alive as one recalls riding on the Canadianna (the Crystal Beach Boat) to the famous amusement park.

Hirsch recalled her day trips to the park with her family. She is a writer, artist and carousel restorer who resides in Niagara Falls.  Her books are available at the Historical Society Museum.  For further information, call 694-7406.
