North Tonawanda: Pappas announces 'Tree City USA' designation

Thu, May 2nd 2019 05:10 pm

City of North Tonawanda Mayor Arthur G. Pappas recently announced the Arbor Day Foundation has once again named the City of North Tonawanda “2018 Tree City USA” in honor of its commitment to effective urban forest management. The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation, in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and National Association of State Foresters.

To commemorate this honor, Pappas gathered with Department of Public Works Superintendent Mark Zellner, Parks and Recreation Director Alex Domaradzki, Alderman-at-Large Robert Pecoraro and City Clerk-Treasurer Matthew Parish on Arbor Day in Raymond Klimek Veterans Park, 700 River Road.  A new tree, a Bloomerang Dark Purple Lilac, was planted by the Department of Youth, Recreation and Parks and a proclamation was read by Mayor Pappas. Patrick Marren, senior forester with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, along with Forester Nate Morey, attended the celebration to present the city with a Tree City USA flag and designation certificate.

“North Tonawanda is proud to be a community that makes the planting and care of trees a priority.  Trees bring shade to our homes and beauty to our neighborhoods, along with numerous economic, social and environmental benefits,” Pappas said.
