On Wednesday, Congressman Chris Collins and the Flight 3407 families are slated to meet with Department of Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao to continue their discussion on ways to continue and improve aviation safety for flying families across the U.S.

The group’s efforts have contributed to the safest period in commercial air travel – now three times longer than the previous period. This meeting will address the concerns that Collins and the Flight 3407 families still have regarding aviation safety standards.

“We have come a long way, but there are still improvements that need to be made,” Collins said. “The pilot records database still needs to be taken out of beta testing and implemented as a requirement for all pilots to input data so it can be used by all commercial airlines, and I hope Secretary Chao can agree.”

Since the tragic crash of Colgan Air Flight 3407 in 2009, Collins and the Flight 3407 families have continued to fight to uphold laws to ensure that will be the last fatal commercial airline crash in the U.S. The Airline Safety and Federal Aviation Administration Act was passed unanimously through Congress and there has been stronger regional airline safety measures implemented by the Federal Aviation Administration and the DOT.

“The crash of Flight 3407 still weighs heavily on us but, working with the families, we have reformed airline safety immensely, and this meeting with Secretary Chao will continue the discussion on how we can make improvements so flying families across the United States will never experience losing a love one,” Collins said.
