Niagara History Center invites WNY to learn about Lockport

Curious about the transformation happening in downtown Lockport? Join Lockport Locks Heritage District Corp. Chairman David Kinyon and Vice Chairman David Chatt for a discussion at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 25, at the Niagara History Center, 215 Niagara St., Lockport.

Kinyon will present an overview of the Lock Tenders Tribute sculpture, and the development of the Erie Canal Flight of Five interpretive plan. The new monument will memorialize the iconic 1895 photo of 12 Lockport Lock tenders and a little girl taken by F.B. Clench on the stairway between the westbound and eastbound Flight of Five Locks.

Kinyon will discuss the selection of River Region artist Susan Geissler to create and install the monument, and the steps that are currently underway in the fabrication of the cast bronze sculptures. Previously, Geissler has created outdoor sculptures in Lewiston.

 Chatt will follow with a brief review of the phase one rehabilitation, which involved locks 69 and 70, as well as a discussion of the phase two rehabilitation of Lock 68 and the work that is currently underway. Chatt recruits and trains lock tenders for the Flight of Five.
