HAL looks into Niagara Falls mysteries

The Historical Association of Lewiston’s April program, “Mysteries of Niagara Falls: Some of the Lesser Known Stories,” will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 25, at the Lutheran Church of the Messiah Fellowship Hall, 915 Oneida St.

It’s no secret many people visit Niagara Falls to see the waterfalls and enjoy the attractions. But, for HAL, Carol Rogers will present stories about people, places and events of the past that go untold: Native American legends telling of a superhuman who lived behind the falls; a giant snake who threatened people living near the river.

In addition to the churning torrent plunging over the Niagara Escarpment, the area around the falls was once flowing with mineral springs, which native people and, later, tourists from all over the world, visited for their therapeutic value. Caves tucked into the gorge walls provided fodder for stories of evil spirits and an actual massacre.

This presentation will focus on these and other stories.

Rogers is an environmental educator with New York State Parks (Niagara regional programs office). She develops and presents environmental and historical programs on the Niagara Region for guests of all ages.

This community event is free and open to all, and refreshments will be served.
