NT Graduate looks to bring experience and fiscal awareness to city school district

Collin Holycross has formally announced his candidacy for the North Tonawanda School Board. Holycross, 43, is a New York state certified teacher in social studies grades five-12 and currently teaches students between fifth and eighth grade at St. Benedict’s School in the City of Buffalo. He has been a longtime coach and board member of the North Tonawanda National Little League and also serves the youth of North Tonawanda as Cub Master of Cub Scout Pack 193.

Holycross is a United States Navy veteran who graduated from the North Tonawanda School District. Holycross cited his time attending North Tonawanda High School as the prime motivator for his desire to get more involved with the process in which the community educates its youth.

“I’m excited to be more active within our school district. It’s a great opportunity to hear the needs of the North Tonawanda parents, teachers, and other community members, and use my skills to address their concerns,” Holycross said.

As an educator, Holycross has a strong understanding of the “fiscal balancing beam” that is the needs of the teachers, parents, administrators and taxpayers. Holycross said he believes that North Tonawanda’s recently released graduation rate of 80 percent does not reflect the $80 million school budget.

“We have the resources available to bring that graduation rate up, but we need to make sure tax dollars are being spent wisely. My experience teaching in private schools has taught me how to stretch dollars farther in ways that public schools often do not need to worry about,” Holycross said.

He also feels that by regularly engaging parents and working with the teachers, the North Tonawanda public school system will be ensured the respect it deserves in the education sector of Western New York.

Holycross lives in North Tonawanda with his wife and two sons, ages 5 and 9. He has been a resident since the age of 3 with the exception of six years after he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 2001. While serving our nation in the Navy, Holycross lived in Jacksonville, Florida and deployed twice to the Middle East in combat roles.
