Menorah will be lit will to spread light of peace throughout community
Canalside announced the lighting of the grand menorah at the third annual Chanukah celebration on Buffalo's waterfront. Chabad House of Buffalo will celebrate the Festival of Chanukah with a parade of cars adorned with custom-designed menorahs arriving at Canalside for the lighting of the menorah at 7 p.m. today. A branch of the 7-1/2-foot tall candelabrum, located adjacent to the Ice at Canalside, will be lit each night of the Jewish holiday.
"The lighting of the menorah at Canalside has become a treasured holiday tradition," said Robert Gioia, chairman, Erie Canals Harbor Development Corp. "We invite the entire community to enjoy the season as they skate and take in all of the activities planned for the month of December."
Chanukah, the Jewish festival celebrating the liberation and rededication of the ancient Temple in Jerusalem, began the evening of Sunday, Dec. 2, and concludes Monday, Dec. 10. The festival is marked by the lighting of the menorah, prayer, music and the sharing of fried foods.
"The menorah stands for light of godliness, wisdom and divine inspiration," said Rabbi Moshe Gurary, Chabad House of Buffalo. "The Chanukah celebration at Canalside is an opportunity for the Jewish community of Buffalo to share the shining light of peace for all to see."
The Ice at Canalside presented by BlueCross BlueShield of WNY encourages visitors to enjoy public ice skating, curling, ice bikes and, the newest addition this year, ice bumper cars. Public skating will be open from 3-7 p.m. More information on the schedule of events, parking and updates can be found at http://www.canalsidebuffalo.com.
