Poloncarz, Bruso visit completed $1.6 million Lancaster project; replaces 60-year old bridge; new 115-foot span features new concrete abutments & approaches, improved water flow beneath bridge
The Erie County Department of Public Works has announced the completion of work on Stony Road Bridge in Lancaster, a two-year project with a total cost of $1.62 million. Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz and Erie County Legislator John Bruso (8th District) joined county Public Works personnel at the bridge to view the completed project prior to the bridge re-opening.
The project began in 2017 with the replacement of the existing, deteriorated concrete culvert at the bridge site with a new, precast concrete box culvert. This phase, completed last year at a cost of approximately $290,000, included widening of the roadway over and adjacent to the culvert along with the installation of new guide railing.
Replacement of the old twin-span steel bridge was started in 2018. That structure, built in 1956, had two spans of approximately 64 feet each, with a total roadway width of 26 feet. The steel superstructure had deteriorated in several locations, with rust evident in some locations, as well as deterioration in many locations on the concrete bridge deck and abutments.
"The Stony Road Bridge project is an infrastructure investment that improves safety and benefits motorists in Erie County," Poloncarz said. "A rusted relic from the past has been replaced with a fully modern bridge that will expedite traffic, improve water flow, and provide a much better driving experience.
"I want to thank DPW Commissioner Geary and his team for their work on this project and all they do to maintain and improve our roads and infrastructure."
Bruso added, "I want to thank the Poloncarz administration for working so quickly to complete this project. Although it was a challenge for the residents of Stony Road, the new bridge will benefit generations to come."
The new bridge is a single-span steel multi-girder bridge spanning a length of 115 feet, with a width of 34 feet between the railings. The bridge was constructed on all-new concrete abutments on piles. The pier in the channel opening was removed as part of this work, thereby improving the waterway opening for flow and eliminating the debris and ice catching hazard. The bridge was also raised slightly to improve the waterway opening. New concrete approach slabs and guide railing were also installed. The cost for this portion of the project was approximately $1.33 million.
Design and construction inspection on the project was performed by CHA, while Hunting Valley Construction was the project contractor.
