More than 100 decorated trees will brighten holidays for families in need
The Girl Scouts of Western New York (GSWNY) Ken-Ton Service Unit, in partnership with the Boulevard Mall, will display more than 100 trees decorated and donated by Girl Scout troops for families in need just in time for the holidays.
"We are excited to collaborate with the Girl Scouts of Western New York on this amazing program said," said Amanda Baumler, Boulevard Mall director of marketing. "Being able to demonstrate and teach the importance of giving back, not only during the holiday season but all year long, will provide a lasting effect on everyone involved."
The trees will be decorated this weekend, and on display next week.
This year marks the 20-year anniversary of the Festival of Trees, which was started by a Girl Scout Ambassador earning her Girl Scout Gold Award. She desired to make the holidays brighter for families in need. The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award in Girl Scouts earned by girls with courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place.
"During this season, when girls are making a list of what they wish to receive during the holidays, it is important for them to experience the meaning of giving back to others said," Nancy Grimes, GSWNY Ken-Ton service unit leader. "This event gives girls some personal joy and knowledge that they can take the lead and make a difference in allowing someone else to experience the joys of the holiday season."
Trees will be given away on a first-come, first-serve basis. Interested families in need should leave a message asking for a tree and they will be contacted to make arrangements for a pick-up/delivery time and any other details while supplies last. The community is open to attend the public reception event (Dec. 7) to get an early look, but trees will not be released for pick-up/delivery until the day after the reception. Families picking up trees are responsible for the teardown, transportation, and set-up of their tree, which should be kept in mind when selecting a tree. Deliveries can be arranged.
