Grand Island: NYSTA announces bridge closure

Fri, Nov 16th 2018 08:00 pm
The New York State Thruway Authority announced Wednesday that the southbound South Grand Island Bridge on the Niagara Thruway (I-190) will close for repair work beginning at 5 a.m. Saturday through 5 a.m. Monday, Nov. 19.
During this scheduled work period, contractors will use specialized equipment to grind the road surface on the southbound South Grand Island Bridge that is intended to increase safety during inclement weather. During the closure, all southbound traffic on the I-190 will be shifted into a single lane configuration on the northbound South Grand Island Bridge. Overhead lane designation signals will be used to direct traffic over the bridge during this construction period.
According to NYSTA, "Crews will work around the clock during the weekend closure to decrease the number of nightly closures and lane shifts on the South Grand Island Bridge, which directly reduces traffic disruptions while providing a safer experience for the traveling public. Additionally, the southbound South Grand Island Bridge will have a more uniform deck profile and a higher quality, smoother riding surface for motorists once completed."
Work on the southbound South Grand Island Bridge is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. tonight, with alternating lane closures.
All work is weather dependent.
Motorists should expect delays, NYSTA said.
