The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation announced there will be a public meeting to outline upcoming projects related to the habitat restoration of the Niagara River.
The public is welcome to attend an open house and presentation on Thursday, Nov. 15, at the William Kaegebein Elementary School auditorium, 1690 Love Road, Grand Island. Projects will be on display from 6-8 p.m., with a 30-minute presentation to begin at 7 p.m..
The projects being presented are at the East River Marsh at Beaver Island, Burnt Ship Creek, Grass Island and the Niagara River shoreline at Buckhorn Island State Park. Funded by more than $11 million from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the projects will help create stronger shorelines, which, in turn, assist fish and wildlife habitat restoration. That will be a step toward the delisting the Niagara River as an EPA "Area of Concern." Work is beginning this fall and will continue through 2020.
