Veterans were saluted Sunday - at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month - at a ceremony held inside Academy Park in Lewiston. The event was presented by Veterans of Foreign Wars Downriver Post No. 7487 and American Legion C.C. Kenney Lewiston Post 1083.
More than two-dozen people came out to thank local veterans.
Michael Roemer served as master of ceremonies. He honored departed members of the armed forces "who have answered the last call."
"As the years pass, we, too, know that we are nearing the end of life's pilgrimage, and sooner or later these services may be held in our memory," Roemer said. "Let us so live that, when our summons comes, we may depart with a good conscience, and the comfort of a sincere religion; belief in God; and perfect charity towards all mankind."
Tributes were made to fallen soldiers by way of flowers placed on a memorial wreath.
Following the Veterans Day ceremony, attendees gathered for breakfast at Syros Restaurant.
There, VFW member Bill Justyk thanked the veterans who organized and staged the remembrance ceremony; Roemer; the MacKenzie Highlanders Pipes and Drums, who performed Sunday; Lee Simonson, who is working with the VFW on raising funds for new memorial monuments; DiMino Lewiston Tops, which was the site of a poppy drive earlier in the weekend; and the Syros Restaurant staff.
Justyk offered special appreciation to Anthony DiMino and the Tops employees; Lewiston residents who purchased flowers; and even Canadian neighbors to the north, who stopped inside the supermarket to exchange poppies.
