As 110,000 children await permanent homes, Adoption STAR's CEO marks personal landmark with call to action
Each year, November is recognized as National Adoption Awareness Month. During this month, leaders in the foster care and adoption communities raise awareness, specifically about the 110,000-plus children and youth who are currently in foster care and awaiting forever families.
Headquartered in Western New York, and with offices in Ohio and Florida, Adoption STAR specializes in domestic infant, kinship and stepparent adoptions, as well as international home studies, and the permanent placement of legally adoptable older children out of foster care with families through the "Adopt an Older Kid" (or "A-OK") program.
The month of November holds special meaning for Adoption STAR's CEO and Founder, Michele Fried.
"In 1987, a baby boy was born smack in the middle of November and he found his way to us. We became parents right before Thanksgiving," she said. "Little did we know that the journey to find each other also changed the course of our futures. I would never have predicted a life and career in the field of adoption for me and for my son, Zack."
Zack was the first of 10 children for Fried, who has been a leader in the adoption field for more than 30 years. Zack recently earned a promotion as the agency's compliance director after 10 years of dedicated service, and offers dual support in his role at as both an adoption professional and adult adoptee.
Adoption for the Fried family truly is a labor of love. Later this month, both mother and son will attend and present at the 2018 Adoptive Parents Committee Conference in Brooklyn (Nov. 18). As families convene about adoption and adoptive parenting, Michele and Zack will also mark National Adoption Day, the day before, which coincides with the day the Fried family brought Zack home all those years ago.
"One of my favorite quotes from the National Adoption Center is this: 'There are no unwanted children, just unfound families.' Adoption STAR believes this is absolutely the case and we will never stop working to find families for children," Michele said. "There is a family for every child!
"Adoption STAR is here to make this happen."
