Mount St. Mary's craft committee makes hospital time happy for children

The craft committee, part of the St. Francis Guild at Mount St. Mary's Hospital, meets every Tuesday to make bears for the children who come to the hospital for surgery and other services. When children arrive for surgery they are greeted by a bear on their bed along with their gown, booties and blanket. As the child gets ready for their procedure, so does their bear.
The bear gets its own surgical cap, wrist band, booties, a band aid and sometimes a children's-size blood pressure cuff. As the child and their bear get ready for surgery together, this tends to make them less scared and more comfortable. And, of course, the bear goes to a new home afterward with its child when discharged.
The craft committee makes the bears out of all types of patterned fabric - holiday themes, super heroes - whatever is donated to them.
