Historical Association of Lewiston Vice President Leandra Collesano presented a $500 scholarship to Christian Burnham of the Tuscarora Nation on Indigenous Peoples' Day. The pictured ceremony took place at the Tuscarora Heroes Monument in Lewiston.
Burnham is a freshman at NCCC studying counseling. He said, "I want to thank everyone here this morning for this scholarship and honor. I am very grateful for this support, and promise to do my best in my studies and helping the community."
HAL curator Tom Collister spoke on behalf of the organization and expressed his hope the Tuscarora Nation and the local communities will continue to strengthen relationships and an effort would be made to make the scholarship an annual event. He also thanked the Tuscaroras for their friendship throughout the centuries.
The Town and Village of Lewiston were one of the early adopters of Indigenous Peoples' Day, which celebrates native history and culture. Today, 45 government entities, including the states of Minnesota, Vermont, Utah and Alaska, mark the holiday.
