Program provides child care to veterans during medical appointments
Congressman Brian Higgins, D-NY-26, announced legislation approved by the House of Representatives includes language that extends the Kids Korner child care program at the Buffalo VA Medical Center through 2019.
"Buffalo has been an example for the country, demonstrating when you offer in-house child care for veterans, it removes an obstacle for treatment," Higgins said.
Kids Korner
opened at the Buffalo VA in 2011 as one of three pilot projects nationwide to provide child care services to veterans visiting the hospital for medical appointments related to physical health or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) treatment. It is popular among parents and grandparents who visit the Buffalo VA for health and mental health appointments, providing care to more than 1,000 children annually.
Language to continue the child care program was included in
H.R. 5895, legislation providing for federal operations related to energy and water, military construction and the Department of Veterans Affairs. Passed by the Senate and House, the White House has indicated the president will sign this bill.
