Niagara Falls Athletic Hall of Fame induction dinner at The Como

The Niagara Falls City School District Athletic Hall of Fame induction dinner will take place at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, at The Como, 2220 Pine Ave. The cost is $30 per person and $12 for each child age 12 and younger. There will be a cash bar. Reservations can be made by calling the district athletic office at 716-286-0794.
The 2018 Inductees are:
Emily Thompson: A 2010 graduate of Niagara Falls High School, Thompson played four years of varsity softball, basketball and tennis. During that time, she captained her team to several league championships. She also received many individual honors, including: Niagara Gazette Softball Player of the Year and Niagara Police Athletic League Prep Athlete of the Year, as well as All Niagara Frontier League and All League honors.
Matt Nalbone: A 2000 graduate of LaSalle Senior High School, Nalbone's career includes six years of varsity swim and participation on the track & field and volleyball teams. His swim accomplishments include Niagara Frontier League Team and individual championships, as well as several Section VI Individual championships. His success continued at the state level, where he enjoyed several top finishes at the state Public High School Athletic Association championships, setting school records in his career.
John McKenna: A 1981 graduate of the "old" Niagara Falls High School, during his Powercat career, he participated in four years of varsity baseball, and three years of varsity football and hockey. He earned several team and individual honors. He capped his career off with a senior year that included First Team All Niagara Frontier League Honors in football, hockey and baseball.
Lou Marcantonio: Marcantonio was inducted posthumously for his coaching career that spanned nearly 30 years. He coached girls and boys bowling at the "old" and the "new" Niagara Falls High School. During his coaching career, his teams won numerous league and section titles as well as capturing state championship. During his time, Marcantonio earned numerous individual honors, including the Outstanding Service Award from the Niagara Frontier League and Section VI. He was inducted to the Niagara Falls Bowling Association Hall of Fame in 1982 and was named Coach of The Year by the Association in 1990.
The 1990 Niagara Falls High School Girls Bowling Team: The lone team to be inducted this year is the 1990 Niagara Falls High School girls bowling team, which captured its third straight section title on its way to winning its first state Public High School Athletic Association championship. Team members include: Cindy Healey, Pattie Gabriele, Tiffany Gadacz, Stacey Wallace, Joanne Roulley and Diana Pannatoni. The team was coached by Marcantonio.
James Starks: A 2005 graduate of Niagara Falls High School, Starks has an accomplished career that includes the All-WNY honors in football and track and field, as well as playing a crucial role on the 2005 NYS Public High School Athletic Association championship basketball team. James continued his football career at the University at Buffalo and became the first 1,000-yard rusher in the Bulls Division I-A era. He finished his UB years as their career rushing leader. Starks was drafted by the NFL's Green Bay Packers in 2010. He played in Super Bowl XLV and won a championship.
Bill Wolcott: A veteran sports writer in the Niagara Region, Wolcott wrote for the Niagara Gazette, Lockport Union Sun & Journal and other publications. His dedication and commitment to covering high school sports ensured that these typically unpublicized athletes received their due recognition. Wolcott also served as adviser to the Niagara University student newspaper, the Niagara Index. He is a founding member of the district's Hall of Fame committee, and is a beloved member of the community.
