A Salvador Dali art exhibition owned by Niagara University's Castellani Art Museum is on its way to Finland.
"Les Diners de Gala by Salvador Dali," published in 1973 as a collaboration between Dali and a "secret chef," will be on display June 16 through Nov. 21 at Serlachius Museums in Mänttä-Vilppula, Finland.
This portfolio of 12 lithographs, complete with a distinctive engraving in the lower margin of each work titled "Spoon with Crutches," is a Surrealist twist on some of Dali's favorite meals. The lithographs are the product of Dali's experimentation with mixed media and regarded by many as some of his most unique prints.
The "secret chef" in Dali's lithographs were the top French restaurants of the day - including Lasserre, La Tour d'Argent, Maxim's and Le Buffet de la Gare de Lyon - whose chefs created the recipes. Dali dedicated "Les Diners de Gala" to his wife, Gala, who is stylized on the golden cover. The collection of 136 eccentric formulas in 12 categories includes an entire chapter on aphrodisiacs.
Dr. Paul Cutler and his wife, Beverly, donated "Les Diners de Gala" to the Castellani Art Museum in 1997. Its inaugural exhibition was presented by CAM Aug. 18, 2013, through March 2, 2014.
