Thirty years ago this month, Janet Ensminger-Nieman began the Evangelistic E's emergency food pantry out of her Cheektowaga home. Despite undergoing breast cancer surgery over the winter, she is still open for business and, on Saturday, will receive all the donations made to the postal food drive in the 14225 ZIP code.
She is need of volunteers from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. to help unload the postal carrier trucks and store the food.
"I have been participating in the postal food drive every year they have been doing it, but this year the post office said we will receive all of the donations made in our ZIP code. What a blessing that will be," said Ensminger-Nieman, who used to be a member agency of the Food Bank of Western New York but now is a registered 501(c)(3) organization that operates independently and depends on donations of food and funding.
"Our goal is to provide emergency food assistance for those in need in our community," she added. "Our policy has always been to be available to the community when people are experiencing a need. If the police or fire personnel show up and tell me about a family that needs food, we take care of them,"
Operating out of her home at 47 Ellwood Place, Ensminger-Nieman takes care of nearly 250 people per month. Contact her at 716-392-2318.
