The Historical Association of Lewiston's next program night, titled "Mark Twain and the Niagara Frontier," will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 22, at the Lutheran Church of the Messiah Fellowship Hall, 915 Oneida St., Lewiston.
Speaker Thomas Reigstad will present an illustrated presentation that will describe Twain's long association with Western New York. Twain lived and worked in Buffalo as a journalist from 1869-71 and returned to the area several times over the ensuing years. Furthermore, Twain spent a good deal of time in Niagara County, presenting public lectures, visiting tourist attractions, and setting a few charming, humorous and fanciful stories in Niagara Falls.
Reigstad will address Twain's personal and literary relationships with Buffalo, Niagara Falls, Lockport and even, a bit tangentially, to Lewiston.
Reigstad is a fourth-generation Buffalonian with degrees from SUNY Buffalo, the University of Missouri and Canisius College. He is an emeritus English professor at SUNY Buffalo State where he still teaches two courses per semester on American literature and baseball and culture. He also was a features writer and copy editor at the former Buffalo Courier-Express and at the Niagara Gazette (where he met his future wife, a native of Niagara Falls). Reigstad is the author of "Scribblin' for a Livin': Mark Twain's Pivotal Period in Buffalo."
This community event is free and open to all. Refreshments will be served.
