The Grand Island Town Board proclaimed Oct. 29, 2017, as Trinity United Methodist Church Day on Grand Island in honor and recognition of the church's upcoming 150th anniversary celebration.
According to the proclamation, issued at Monday's board meeting, Trinity Church started as a German-speaking congregation that belonged to the Evangelical Association, and erected its first building in 1867.
In 1946, Trinity Evangelical Church of Grand Island and the United Brethren in Christ Church united to form Trinity Evangelical United Brethren Church. In 1968, Trinity Evangelical United Brethren Church became Trinity United Methodist Church by the union of these two denominations.
In making the proclamation, the board said: "Through the years, Trinity Church has been blessed by God who has guided it with New Visions, challenged it with new missions, and provided it with what was needed. ... Trinity celebrates the rich tradition and the ministry of the past, and its members give thanks and praise to God and reaffirm God's call to serve the community of Grand Island, nearby communities, and all the people of the world.
