Grand Island: Town Board issues proclamation for Buddy Poppy Drive

The Grand Island Town Board proclaimed Sept. 8 and 9 as American Legion Patriot Poppy Days on Grand Island in advance of the American Legion Grand Island Post No. 1346 Patriot Day Poppy Drive that weekend.
Tuesday, at its first meeting of the month, the Grand Island Town Board issued a proclamation that noted Grand Island Post No. 1346 observes Sept. 11 as Patriot Day, remembering the souls lost on Sept. 11, 2001, in the Twin Towers, Pentagon and Flight 93 and in the subsequent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
In making the proclamation, the board pointed out the American Legion sponsors many community programs, such as high school scholarships, Americanism contests, the Wounded Warriors program, and Veterans Hospital activities. The Grand Island Post No. 1346 also sponsors an American Legion Baseball team and Boy Scouts.
The post "urges all veterans to join and become a Legionnaire, help their community, and perpetuate the work of the Legion for veterans and society," the proclamation stated.
The board also said it "urges our citizens to recognize the merits of this cause by contributing generously to this drive, and wear a Patriot Poppy as evidence of their support."
Buddy Poppy Drive volunteers will be stationed at Tops Markets, Northwest Bank, KeyBank, M&T Bank and 7-Eleven.
