GNBC hosts 'Nutcracker' auditions

It's getting to be that time of year again.
"The Nutcracker," the Greater Niagara Ballet Company's annual family-friendly holiday show, returns the weekend of Dec. 8-9 to the Niagara Falls High School Performing Arts Center. The Beverley Feder-directed show features local dancers, guest artists and character performers.
Those looking to participate can audition Saturday, Sept. 16, at the Feder School of Classical Ballet, located within the Niagara Arts and Cultural Center, 1201 Pine Ave. Enter through the purple door.
The schedule includes tryouts for the following:
Character Dancers
•9-9:45 a.m. children ages 6-10: Dancers needed; no dance experience is necessary. Available roles include party scene and grand march children.
•9:45-10:30 a.m. children ages 8-12: Dancers needed; some dance experience is necessary. Available parts include battle scene, mice and soldiers.
•10:30-11 a.m. children ages 8-10: A dance or gymnastics background is necessary. Available positions include "Bon-Bons," "Arabian" handmaidens and party butlers.
•11-11:30 a.m. children ages 12 and up: Dance experience is necessary. Available scenes include Act I party scene (maids) and Act II jesters (gymnastics required).
Corps de Ballet & Soloists
•12:30 to 1:30 p.m.: Dancers ages 12 and up can audition for a spot performing with the GNBC corps de ballet or for a solo role. Corps parts include "Waltz of the Flowers," "Snowflakes," "Russian" and "Chinese." Solo parts include "Harlequin," "Columbine," "Drummers," "Dew Drop," "Spanish," "Candy Canes," "Chinese," "Russian" and "Arabian."
A dance background is necessary for these more advanced numbers. Moreover, females must have strong pointe skills.
Clara and Fritz
Those interested in portraying Clara and Fritz must audition for at least one other part.
Children should arrive in proper dance attire 30 minutes before tryout time. The participation fee is $62 per person, and $52 for each additional family member. The cost covers ballet warm-up and rehearsals.
Corps parts will be determined after auditions. If your child is selected for the corps, an additional $15 will be due.
Each family is required to sell four tickets to our fundraiser, and to print and sign performance agreement and release of claims forms at the audition.
 Corps rehearsals begin Saturday, Sept. 23. Rehearsals begin Saturday, Sept. 30, for party scene, battle scene and "Bon-Bons."
A mandatory parent meeting and role reveal will held at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 22.
