Grand Island Highway Department: Community blood drive for Unyts set for Aug. 10

Mon, Jul 31st 2017 07:00 am
The Grand Island community is teaming up with Unyts to ensure that blood products are available for patients in need this summer.
On Thursday, Aug. 10, a blood drive will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Highway Department, 1820 Whitehaven Road. All presenting donors will receive a T-shirt and a hot dog.
According to Unyts, the demand for blood tends to outpace supply during the summer season, but Western New Yorkers have an opportunity to change that trend at an upcoming Unyts blood drive.
Unyts said many different groups are pitching in to help make sure the blood drive is a success, such as the Grand Island Highway Department, Grand Island Town Hall, the Rotary Club of Grand Island, the Grand Island Chamber of Commerce and Grand Island High School.
JT Tomkins, Grand Island highway superintendent, said, "We have a great group of guys at the shop that truly believe in supporting our community. Giving a blood donation to Unyts is a tangible act that makes us feel like we are making a difference."
To schedule an appointment to donate blood, contact Unyts at 716-512-7940, or sign up online at www.unyts.org and click on "Donate Blood." Walk-ins are welcome.
