Celebrate the 200th anniversary of the start of the Erie Canal at the Niagara History Center's "July Family Night," from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 18, at the museum's Lockport site, 215 Niagara St.
Ray Wigle, director of the History Center's Erie Canal Discovery Center, will take guests back 200 years to the start of construction. They'll look at what took place in Rome, New York, on July 4, 1817, when construction began on the canal. Wigle will explain why the Erie Canal was built and what builders had to do, plus explain canal locks and the work done in Lockport.
Hands-on activities and crafts for children and adults also will be included.
Admission to "Family Night" is free. A pizza and beverage supper will be available for a nominal donation from 5:30-6 p.m., followed by the program.
"Family Nights" are a series of monthly programs and activities specifically designed for families with children ages 5 and up. All ages can share a good time learning about history that happened right here in Niagara County. Organizers said the series highlights local history in formats appealing to everyone, with a different theme each month.
Upcoming themes, all with Niagara County emphasis, include: Aug. 22, "History of the Niagara County Fair"; Sept. 19, "One-Room Schoolhouses"; and Oct. 17, "Farms and Apple Orchards."
"Family Nights" are open to all Western New Yorkers, regardless of residence. Reservations are required. Call the History Center at 716-434-7433 to reserve a spot or for additional information.
The History Center receives grant assistance from the New York State Council on the Arts, with the support of Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.
