Cornell Cooperative Extension and The Heart Center of Niagara will bring healthy summer eating to the heart of the city beginning Thursday, June 22, when the Veggie Van Mobile Farmers Market pays the first of 12 weekly visits to Memorial Medical Center's downtown campus.
The June 22 kickoff event, part of New York state's Creating Healthy Schools and Communities initiative, will be held from 1-3 p.m. in front of the Heart Center at 571 10th St.
In addition to the Veggie Van, which will offer locally grown fruit and vegetables at discount prices, a chef from Wegmans will be on hand to demonstrate tasty ways to prepare fresh produce. Medical center personnel will conduct blood pressure checks and heart disease risk screenings, while physicians at the "Ask the Doctor" table will answer health and wellness questions.
"Brown Bag" medication checks will be offered by Memorial's pharmacy department.
"Put your prescription and non-prescription drugs and supplements in a bag and bring them with you that day," said Pharmacy Director Michelle Lewis. "We will review them with you so you can better understand what you are taking. We'll also make recommendations to improve therapy and possibly reduce adverse effects or drug interactions."
With the exception of Aug. 3, the Veggie Van will return to Memorial every Thursday afternoon through Sept. 1, and will accommodate both cash and EBT purchases.
"Our 'Million Hearts Project' calls for increasing awareness about heart disease prevention and empowering community members to better control their own heart health," Memorial Marketing Director Julie Clark said. "This summer's weekly visits by the Veggie Van Mobile Farmers Market will give people the means to make heart-healthy, affordable food choices."
